This game is all about freedom of expression and emotion! It’s important for student athletes to feel they have a voice and acknowledge the importance of their mental illness. Countless student athletes have struggled, fought, and lived with mental health that has resulted in unimaginable outcomes and life long scars. While this game is meant to allow athletes to express themselves, there is also room for laughter and a place to simply reflect on their practice, season, or career.

I am an artist and graphic designer, I create work that makes me feel rejuvenated, creative, and healed. By creating work that explores trauma, identity, culture, and body image I can create a space for safe discussion about these topics.

'Rebuilding my Reflection' is a personal project that goes over the damaging thoughts and body image issues I had about my body growing up. I saw my body in fragments rather than a whole body. Parts of my body that were commonly pointed out and criticized were my arms, my stomach, and my chin. I focused on those parts of my body so much that I couldn’t see the rest of me. One day something clicks, and I realize it’s so miserable to constantly be hating on my body just for solely being fat. What a depressing time it was, I was limiting myself in what I could do because I was so deeply insecure. I slowly began to change my view of my body, I began to explore my fashion taste, personality, and Ghanaian culture safely while also learning to open up more about my experience with my friends. I was met with empathy and love and told that my feelings were valid, and thus I decided to create 'Rebuilding My Reflection.' 'Rebuilding My Reflection' differs from any other work I have done. I wanted to utilize creating a design for a 3-dimensional space, making the piece large to emphasize the space I take up, and that it is okay for me to take up space. I wanted to explore my trauma centered around my body and the debilitating thoughts that followed it, I perceived my body in such a negative light for years. For the first time, I’m celebrating the progress I’ve made toward the journey to unconditional self-love and acceptance. I am grateful and blessed for the support of my family, friends, professors, and peers for the helping me along the way through doubts, fears, tears, typography, and glass breaking. I am forever grateful to have been met with open arms when creating such a personal and emotional piece so near and dear to my heart and the very fiber of my being. To all my big folks, I love you and this one goes out for you!

As an artist, I have always been fascinated by the art world. My love for the medium began during a school trip to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC. Through observing works from Mary Cassatt to Nam Jun Paik, I was entranced by how art can be approached in distinctive ways. From there, I found my passion through a variety of media such as painting, visual design, and photography. My exploration of each medium correlates with how I perceive art as “an escape from the mundane and a portal into the surreal mind.” Through this, art becomes a portal into imagination, a world of artistic ambition, and a road towards creative possibilities.

In my work, narrative and themes are central to my creative process. With this in mind, I devise a strategy that incorporates different topics of discussion from nature to identity, resulting in an amalgamation that serves as a basis. Afterwards, I utilize a distinctive palette that corresponds with the tone of the work be it somber (black and white) or jovial (vibrant) in manner. Upon determining these core elements, I select what type of medium to utilize and build them through visualization. Taking feedback into account, I work towards fixing common mistakes in my work and improve them as I progress towards completion. Through this approach, I succeed in capturing the subject matter and channel them into the forefront of the composition.

My two-part portrait series, Looking at my Parents, depicts my mother and father in their youth. I remember going through photo albums that chronicled different events in their lives. From adolescence to adulthood to marriage, I had been fascinated by what my parents were like before I was born. In approaching this project, I pondered on how I should capture their youth on canvas and how both compositions reflected them. In doing so, I would have to consider these ideas and channel them into my work.

For the first portrait, I wanted to capture my mother in her early twenties. through warm colors and patterns that resonated with her welcoming nature. I played with patterns in spaces from fabrics to jewelry in how it spoke to her heritage. I wanted to retain key aspects of detail, notably in balancing lights and darks throughout the process. By using acrylic on canvas, I was able to relay these features in keeping true to her personality.

As for the second portrait, I wanted to portray my father in his mid-twenties. However, the palette I chose was meant to be cooler in mixing greens and blues. I wanted to retain my father’s stern yet solemn personality through applying rounded patterns that juxtaposed from that of the first. I have been keen on showing two sides of the same coin in this series and this portrait was no exception. Through utilizing contrast, I was able to get enough detail for my father within the composition.

“The Last Rebirth” is the first story I plan on illustrating and publishing. Having spent nearly a decade developing the story to where it is now, working on this story, from beginning to end, has become my life’s end goal. As my senior project, I believe this moment will be the best opportunity I will get to push myself to work. The main character, Riyu Yasuhiro, will be the vehicle in which the elements of purpose will be conveyed. The world he lives in is a complete reflection of our own, taking place in the not-so-distant future, and the locations he finds himself in during his travels will test the values and morals he acquired throughout his life at this point. The actions and decisions Riyu makes will have its consequences and how he handles them will be what drives the story.

For my senior project idea, I created a made-up a festival. The idea stemmed from my love for music and the want to do something pertaining to branding. Thinking about festivals I've been to, I wanted to recreate my own fictional festival as it gives me creative liberty, and the chance to prove to myself that I have the drive to dive into murky waters (as they say). In the end, I used my designs and converted them into tangible deliverables that marker my festival. This is the cherry on top for my time in college. 🍒

I feel humanity has cast aside our great ape cousins, treating their home as something that can be destroyed in the hopes of turning a profit. It was estimated in 2016 that orangutans will be extinct in 25 years at their current rate of decline. In Borneo and Sumatra, the native homes of the orangutan, it is estimated that 50,000 of their numbers have died as a direct result of deforestation. Learning this is just more fuel for my fire to educate my audience on orangutan habitat destruction. I think it is important to educate my audience on the palm oil industry and how it is directly responsible for the destruction of the orangutans' habitat. I also think it is important to provide my audience with information on how they can help to save the orangutans. There are many things that everyday folks can do to help, such as avoiding products that contain palm oil and supporting companies that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. There are also many organizations, such as the World Wildlife Foundation and The Orangutan Project, that are working to save the orangutans. Though the organizations that are working towards saving the orangutans are wonderful and do a lot for the cause, I wanted to condense this information they provide into a format that is easy to digest for someone who is interested in the topic but would be easily bored by a list of statistics presented in a more academic format. I felt this would be best accomplished by combining both an infographic with a poster by putting the more dense information into the booklet, which would then fold out into an appealing and eye catching a poster of a baby orangutan.

This project focuses on unhealthy coping and the hard realities of healing on your own.

This project took quite a bit of retooling to figure out how I wanted to present the concept of wearing one’s insides on their outsides. In the last few years, life has gotten about as blurry as Velma without her glasses and I am now starting to figure out how to regain my mental clarity and focus. I believe the emotional turmoil that accompanies the cycle of emotional pain, failures, self-doubt, overindulgence, and further spiral continues until one comes to terms with themselves and their actions. These works intend to allow me to come to terms with my own experiences as well as poke holes in the “use X substance to cope easier” rhetoric I've been subjected to. Those are crutches and not true healing. As the doctors told me, the best way to heal an injured leg when on crutches is to stay off it completely. I use godspeed, commonly abbreviated to GDSPD, as a stand-in for all the substances because each has different effects but one thing in common is their relative distortion of the passage of time once consumed. A puff of this, a swig of that, a line of **** all get you to the same conclusion: numb. We’ve all gotten good and gone in our time on this rock once or twice but living with those kinds of crutches, will leave you with a permanent limp.

Fresh Wtr is a clothing brand set to bring awareness to the water crisis happening in the U.S. The clothes are designed for people in our communities to wear with style to look stylish in them, but to bring the reminder that we all need water, and to bring water to the communities that are in need. My goal is to expand the brand from a local community and state-wide campaign, to then reach out globally to affected countries who are also going through a water crisis.

The Digital Aquarium combines my primary passions into one big project: illustration, animation, and arts and crafts. The animation technique is a style called rotoscoping that involves drawing each frame by hand, one by one, over a video of the real fish to replicate the way that they move while having an illustrative touch. Each frame being so clearly visible to the viewer while still depicting accurate movement makes rotoscoping a fascinating medium to observe.

The booklet that serves as a companion to the aquarium goes into detail on the various types of fish that are displayed, along with a few more. It is geared towards new fish owners, having information on popular and easy to take care of fish that would be vital for them to know. While it is geared specifically for beginner fish keepers, it also serves as a general facts book for people to learn new things about these fish.

The booklet is handmade and in the style of a popup book. The fish can come alive and jump out of the book just by turning the pages, and can be further manipulated via pull-out tabs that enhance interaction. My goal with this digital aquarium is to create a unique experience that people can refer back to fondly.
