Luan Nguyen is an aspiring concept artist who creates digital illustrations of imaginary objects, environment, and characters. For the senior Project, Luan is designing three character concepts for an internship at Riot Games. To challenge himself, he is narrowing the themes of the characters down to a nautical theme where each character represents a different culture and aesthetic. The goal of the project is to combine real world element with existing culture or historical design. For example the first character is a shark with pirate motifs and the second character is inspired by polynesian aesthetic combined with manta ray motifs. An additional part of this project is to document the entire process of character creation. This includes sketches, iteration, research, and the final illustration. The project is formated like an industry standard character sheet. With this project, Luan will use these character to apply for internships within the video game/ entertainment industry.

My name is Michael Nguyen, I come from a family of artists; one is a musician, one is a film guy and one is a writer/dancer and so visual arts is my forte. All of our inspirations come from storytelling in film. We love how a story can be told through film so each us chose a discipline to tell our stories in; that is my goal every time I create.

One of my friends told me to do this project based on something that I love. Martial arts has been a part of my life for so long so this was the perfect subject to do my project on. When the UFC first debuted in November 1993, fighters from various martial arts came together to compete and see who was the better fighter and what was the better style. This trend dominated the sport in it’s early years but as the sport grew, athletes became more well rounded, rather than being single style specialist.Casual fans of the sport still see this as an eclectic sport, where its style vs style. My project will show that this is a transcendent sport, where it transcends the component martial arts into an entirely new skill set: Shootboxing: Integration between striking and takedowns in the open position Clinchboxing: Integration between striking and takedowns whilst locked in a standing clinch Fenceboxing: Integration between striking and takedowns whilst propped on the fence Grappleboxing: The skill of striking, positional exchange and submissions whilst on the ground.

Hi! I’m a versatile graphic and web designer dedicated to achieving timeless, authentic solutions for design issues. During my time at Mason, I have made lifelong friends, discovered my passion, and grown a love for typography. I am incredibly proud of myself and my peers for everything we’ve accomplished here. Moving forward, I aim to be an established, respectable designer recognized for branding, packaging, and web design.

To connect with my roots, I designed a mooncake packaging set to honor my culture and family. This project holds great intimate value to me as it embodies and merges my cultural identity, family, and passion—the things that are most important to me. I enjoy seeing my work exist in the physical world, so packaging was the perfect form for this project. Each mooncake box has a unique message dedicated to my mom, dad, older sister, and myself. I adore that I am able to give each of them a piece of this project, expressing affection while also sharing my passion with them.

My art as a multimedia specialist visualizes ideas through mediums that are mainly technology based. Using digital media like animation, video, sound art and digital printmaking; the visuals the I compose effectively communicates and express the ideas of myself and others. In my project “Visual Rhythm”, I decompose parts of a rhythmic beat and match it with different elements of a subject (which in this case is the sport of basketball). In this film, I plan to help the audience explore the importance of each instrument involved in a musical production. Each individual part of a beat holds great value into the development of a finished track.

The bass line of the instrumental is connected to the release of the jump-shot. The bass of an instrumental serves as the heartbeat of a song. In this case, I connect it to the jump-shot release because this function of the sport is what's unique about any individual who participates. Just like how we all have different functioning hearts and souls, each song has a unique bass line that gives the song its "soul" and characteristics.

The "clap" or the snare of the instrumental coexists with the make of each shot in the video. After a perfect release from a shooter, the ball is most likely to make it through the goal. Same goes for the rhythm of a song. After an effective bass line, there is always a snare to follow up and bring the beat together in a timely fashion.

The hi-hats of the beat works together with the dribbling of the ball in this visual. In order to maneuver about court with the ball, you have to dribble it. This is the most constant rule in the game of basketball which has evolved beyond measures throughout its entire existence. The hi-hats of the beat can also be compared in such manner. The hi-hats serve as a backdrop to the main elements of the bass and snare, but it is a portion that you have to intake throughout the whole production. More complex hi-hat patterns have been explored throughout the years of hip-hop, adding the triple hi-hat is what compares to this experimentation in this genre.

Being able to combine and deconstruct these elements in relation to another subject will encourage viewers to be more attentive about each section of production. Maybe the person who is viewing this video could care less about basketball, which is completely fine. But having this inside-out view in any subject gives an individual better understanding and appreciation of the pieces that are combined to develop a product or idea.

Art has always been in my life for a long time. I enjoy working within different media, as it helps me grow and develop unique ideas for diverse projects. I've always been amazed at the beautiful styles, mediums, and information made into designs where ever I went. It inspired me to get into graphic design. As a designer, I aim to create something that others will enjoy and add my creativity to my work.

Through this senior project, I wanted to do a picture book on my dog Jet. I've always wanted to illustrate and include my dog as the main character in a book. The book shares all of the funny and trouble-making moments from Jet. This story showcases his personality and his thoughts each moment he is doing something bad. You will enjoy all of the cute and troublemaking moments from Jet throughout this illustration book!

Areej Rizwan is a graphic designer passionate about portraying classical elements found in Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures as well as her religion to build a bridge of reinforcement and cultural connection with others in society. Her work consists of representing the experiences and stories of others and transforming them into innovative designs. Her dream is to create positive change, whether big or small, to help future generations understand their purpose in a world so unknown and often mysterious. She lives by the statement: "My success is only by God" [Quran 11:88]. She believes that success, power, and guidance all come from God, and with strong faith and dedication, you can get through all obstacles in life.

In her project, From the Origin, Areej designed a clothing brand that reflects the visual language of her home country, Pakistan, a combination of Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures. The goal was to bring awareness and educate others on the differences in these cultures and appreciate the textiles, colors, shapes, patterns, and languages represented. She wanted to share the voices of those underrepresented in mainstream media and showcase its uniqueness to others. She created two cultural and traditional garments, An Abaya and a Shalwar Kameez, which are staple clothing pieces. She used designs found in architecture, books, streets, textiles, and traditional structures to create her clothing pieces. She named her brand, Sabaa, meaning a gentle breeze as it conveys messages, spreads them through different channels, and shapes meaning. She wants her brand to fill the void of misrepresentation in mainstream media and appreciate the differences we all have in society.

I have always wanted to be creative and work in multiple areas to evolve and keep my mind active. Graphic Design is what allows me that opportunity day in, day out whether it is working with print, digital or both! The constant need to adapt and problem solve in this field is something I enjoy because it pushes my limits as a creative, and allows the opportunity to work with other like-minded people. And even working with others who you’re at odds with can bring about lessons. My goal is to never stop learning and absorb and practice as much knowledge as possible.

Justin Ruiz

Justin Ruiz

Influenced by Japanese art that of 漫画家 (Manga artists) and that of cultural pop art . Ruiz creates artworks with the mediums of photobashing, animation, digital illustrations all with these themes in mind. The intent to bring two unlikely concepts under the same metaphorical roof has been an idea Ruiz hopes to achieve with the several mediums by either combination of individually. With the goal of showcasing that any art regardless of origin can connect with those who view it but also can connect with ideas that would contrast their own. Ruiz’s process to ensure this idea and concept is much more than just an idea and concept as observed common materials used in Manga alongside that of Pop art during its initial artistic movement found similarities in terms of production, what's appealing to the larger demographic in mind for both of these ideas.

Theorist Laura Mulvey coined the term “male gaze” in her 1973 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," Ruiz showcases this exact concept within his series of 9 illustrations of the female physique broken down, while replicating and mimicking the loud and bright style found in pop art to emphasis and draw more attention to the broken figures and focus on the male gaze hence furthering Laura Mulvey coined term of the male gaze while bringing the irony of this concept from a male’s perspective.
