ARTIST STATEMENT: Race and representation are a big theme of my work but so is fantasy. As a black woman I value drawing characters of color specifically black woman and girls as society always paints us with a negative brush. I want my art to be a safe place for other artists of color to enjoy. There is a whole untapped market of creating down to earth stories with minority lead characters which is what my senior project reflects. I decided to create this work as this is my final year of college and wanted to showcase my skills I’ve learned in my animation and illustration classes. In the future, I plan to work in character design as it encompasses my key values in illustration.
