ARTIST STATEMENT: My clothing line called Color Me Self Care focuses on keeping self-care relevant in today’s society through fashion and illustration. The line consists of three t-shirts that feature illustrations showing acts of self-care from three categories: spiritual, sensory, and intellectual. I filmed my mother, my teenage cousin, and myself talking about ways we take care of ourselves. By filming three individuals from different generations, I wanted to compare our views on self-care. I created illustrations about self-care because I developed a healthier relationship with myself by understanding the importance of self-care in college. When I was a teenager, I had low self-esteem. In college, I began to take better care of myself, which made me more aware of my identity and confidence in myself. Then, my identity and higher self-esteem started to show in my art. I would like the viewers to understand that self-care is vital for having a healthy well-being and that it should continue to be talked about in the public conscious, especially during the pandemic.
