ARTIST STATEMENT: Heart of Borinquen is an illustrated series that depicts a fictional story based on the culture and lives of the Taínos. The Taínos were the indigenous people who once inhabited the Caribbean before the arrival of Columbus. Rather than focusing on the topic of colonization, Concepcion wants to draw attention to the Native American tribe, their culture and their way of life, that often gets glanced over in American history books. Through the use of digital illustration, Concepcion wants to capture the beauty of the Caribbean and its original inhabitants as a way to pay homage to her ancestral roots, as well as, bring to light an important historical community that has been under recognized for centuries.
