BFA Drawing

DESIGNER STATEMENT: My background in the military and technology, where logic and order are commonplace, shapes my aesthetic. I employ a scientific or analytic approach of linear thinking, sometimes referred to as “left-brain” methodology. My work exhibits pattern and rectilinear forms, which are principle to this aesthetic. I combine these forms with the new information and skills learned in the creative process which is referred to as “rightbrain” methodology. This mixture has developed my structured style and voice resulting in constructed or pieced compositions depicting my “left to right” approach.

My drawings combine black-and-white and color media with an amalgamation of organic figures and rectilinear backgrounds to reconcile both sides. They represent the complexity and multi-dimensionality of humankind and express the surrounding world in a visual manner derived from a linear strategy. This collaged method is my visual representation of reverse engineering the organic world and breaking it down to see it through an ordered, systematic lens. The result produces a disjointed feel further enforcing the dichotomy of two diametrically opposed thought processes.

My muse for this work is my daughter who is less linear and more creative by nature. With her as my inspirational guide, I was emboldened to challenge myself to bridge the gap between the two systems of linear and visual practice. By looking at the world through her eyes and my own simultaneously, I can manufacture the world in which we both live.
