DESIGNER STATEMENT: I was born and raised in Prince William County. My family has been here for at least five generations. Over the course of my lifetime, I have seen the county evolve and change in complex ways that I am still growing to understand. It will never be the same.

One of the most controversial topics within Prince William County is the subject of the Rural Crescent and what the future holds for that land. The Rural Crescent describes the western half of the countyโ€™s land, which contains the Manassas Battlefields, farms, and many homes. The county is divided by those who want to maintain the history or environment of the lands, and those who would intend to develop urban infrastructures.

The Voices of The Crescent uses a website, soil, and photography to document the tension and provide a forum to be heard. Viewers are encouraged to walk on the soil and use the experience of the piece to consider their own relationship with change in their own life and surrounding space. Including but not limited to, the decrease of independently owned farms, inadequate housing for the population, environmental issues, and the demands of urban sprawl.
