ARTIST STATEMENT:  We the people have grown accustomed to a dualism between homo sapiens and other animals through our conscious reality, perceiving our actions in the world completely distinct from our living counterparts. In We the Animals, anthropomorphic animals are used, particularly birds and rabbits, to create a universe that merges characteristics between human society and animality, blurring the lines between what is human and what’s animalistic. These aberrant animals reflect our own societal defects, that although we are a species of reasoning beings, we still demonstrate hierarchical and predator vs. prey qualities between one another that parallels the way the rest of the animal kingdom does.

This work has been created from a satirical mindset to exemplify this shortcoming in human nature, to show that the dualism we display towards non-human animalia isn’t as true as we make it out to be. These pieces are in no way meant to glamorize these actions and circumstances; they are intended to express an alternate reflection of what our society can look like.

In printmaking, especially screen printing, I’ve found that all my foundations in creating art can come into play and used similarly to collage, uniting each medium into a single composition. In this series I used traditional drawing, painting, photography, and digital drawing to create the final prints.
