ARTIST STATEMENT: Growing up in Accra, Ghana, I was forced to endure the litter epidemic that overtook our country due to improper waste management practices. In order to deal with this issue and alleviate the problem, many individuals found ways to make the waste functional after their assigned purposes by making them into furniture, clothing, or even art.

This inspired me to make a triptych piece in which I would use the recyclable materials in my environment to create three dimensional elements. This piece would be to raise awareness of the resourcefulness of our waste material and how they can be used to beautify our environments. In this piece, I have depicted an “abossom” which is a deity or a spiritual protector of nature in Ghanaian culture.

Madame Rosanne is a call to action to artists and the general public to make use of their waste products in the beautification of their spaces as opposed to partaking in the impulsive spending which in due time would lead to improper waste management.
