BFA Sculpture
ARTIST STATEMENT: I am an artist that works in many disciplines, from painting and sculpture to woodwork and ceramics. In all mediums I find myself fascinated by the complex human form and how small changes in posture or facial details can create a completely unique identity. As a result, I’ve spent the last few years experimenting with figurative sculpture. It only seems right for me to finish this part of my life with a figurative piece.
This piece is titled Broken. To be broken in the physical sense means that damage has been done in a way that prevents something from fulfilling its intended purpose. To be broken in the emotional sense means that a person has been damaged emotionally to the point that they feel they cannot function normally. The resin casting method creates complexity and natural imperfections in order to strengthen the sense of realism and emotion. Broken is a portrayal of hatred towards the self, personified by a young man tearing at his own skin. His body is covered with scars, indicative of the constant punishment undergone by those who treat themselves as their enemy.
