ARTIST STATEMENT: The Legend of Marbrook functions as a story-within-a-story and was created to help explore the primary motivation of the main protagonist in a larger, overarching story set in the distant future. Essentially, this piece is a prequel set thousands of years in the past of another story.

This version of The Legend of Marbrook is only one of multiple versions of the legend passed throughout time. It is an in-world folktale, passed from generation to generation and, like all folktales, is subject to the teller's memory and interpretation.

One other version of the story never mentions The King meeting Marbrook and instead The Healer and Marbrook were close companions. In that version the Healers' final action is no longer an act of revenge but an act of love and desperation. The only common theme of each telling is two people face tragedy forcing one and/or both to transform unless they wish to be separated from one another by death.
